Awareness and Education at George House Trust

We were pleased to be at George House Trust last night, raising awareness and sharing Nicola and Ricky's journey amongst the Manchester community. This group was aimed at the black African community, mainly men.
The first step with RMC (Renal Medullary Carcinoma) is knowing the links with Sickle Cell, knowing if you are a carrier, and knowing the signs and symptoms of this rare form of kidney cancer.
Nicola, the CEO of the charity, gave a presentation which included a video that highlighted the lack of knowledge around RMC and the importance of early diagnosis.
This was followed up with a Q&A session and a questionnaire for the attendees to ensure that everyone left the session with some knowledge and confidence around RMC.
Most attendees did not know their status — i.e. if they had Sickle Cell trait or any other blood disorder.
We are pleased that the outcome of this session was that the majority of the attendees will now be taking up the opportunity to be tested for FREE to find out if they carry the Sickle Cell trait, which is a major step forward.
This is a FREE test which can be arranged by contacting Manchester Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre on 0161 529 6605.
For more information on sickle-cell trait or sickle-cell disease, please contact Sickle Cell Care Manchester on 0161 277 7648. Alternatively, you may consider contacting your own GP.
If you would like to arrange an awareness session with us in your community or business, please get in touch via our contact page.

Can you help us?
We rely on your donations to continue our important work, and we welcome any offers of your valuable time.
If you are a medical professional and feel that you can help us — or that we can help you — with research into rare renal cancers, we would love to hear from you.
